Get Smart B4U Get Sexy is a sex education program designed to provide prevention and intervention resources to youth and young adults, especially to those who are African American and/or Black, females, in foster care systems and/or at high risk of sexually transmitted infections.
Sexy & Smart: Extracting Truths about Sex Education for Black Youth
Numerous research indicates that African Americans/Black individuals exhibit significantly elevated incidences of gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV, frequently at rates 4 to 10 times higher than those of Whites and other racial/ethnic demographics.
This academic investigation focuses on the sexual and reproductive health scenario of Black adolescents in Los Angeles County, utilizing a community-based participatory research methodology rooted in the principles of reproductive justice.
By integrating quantitative surveys, detailed qualitative listening sessions, and focus groups that are culturally attuned, this study aims to deeply understand the sexual health experiences, challenges, and preferences of Black youth between the ages of 14 to 30.
Some of our featured campaigns include:
STEP FORWARD
providing training, education, and leadership development for young black females against excessive sexual harassment and unfair school discipline. Through this program, tools and resources are provided, safe spaces are created, empowerment and self-expression is encouraged, and systematic change is promoted.
SPRING INTO LOVE
a youth-led, sexual health, and reproductive health conference that takes place in East and South Los Angeles and aims to educate youth with peer leaders about a wide range of health topics. This program focuses on the high rates of sexually transmitted infections among Black and Latina women who are 25 and under.
REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE TRAINING
an annual training program for new and existing volunteers as well as allied organizations wanting to learn more about reproductive justice. Trained volunteers are able to utilize their skills during the different lobby and education trips annually with legislatures.
SEX SPEAKS
a collaborative program for young black women ages 18 – 30 that encourages and offers space to create art and media around black women’s sexual lives and identities. Events include safe spaces to share personal sex stories through essays, poetry, spoken word, and more. In addition, this program hosts group discussions on the needs of young black women when it comes to maintaining healthy relationships and good reproductive and sexual health.
These goals are met through the participation and facilitation of workshops and community-based events, along with state and nation-wide initiatives.
The resources and information provided are geared to provide dialogue and answers to the questions and concerns that youth and young adults may have in regard to sexuality, health, healthy relationships, preventive care, mental health and leadership.
This program recognizes the undeniable need for information and access to resources, in order to address disparities such as lack of preventive care, domestic violence, reproductive health to name a few.
